Golden Rules of Tech

Golden Rules of TechI believe there are some important rules that all computer professionals must follow regardless of the specific area of expertise. I’m going to call these “The 5 Golden Rules of Tech” and see what you think of this, but it’s my daily creed. I’d like to get some feedback on these whether you are a tech or a user who has had experience with tech support of any kind. If you’ve ever dealt with a tech who didn’t follow these rules, you probably are in the majority. Have I missed any major points on these golden rules?

  1. Always show respect for the person you are supporting (user) and never make them feel stupid for not having your level of expertise. I’ve seen many techs make fun of users and it’s not pretty. It’s the same thing as that bully that used to do it to you in school because you were a nerd. Not cool.
  2. Never be too proud to call technical support for assistance with a product you aren’t totally familiar with or even one you think you know. This humility will pay off when you get the job done more quickly than the next guy because he was afraid to admit he needed some help.
  3. Find out what the real problem is. You can fix the problem you’ve been asked to fix, but if that’s not the underlying issue, it will happen again. Also remember that because of not having your level of experience, many folks won’t know what is really wrong and you never want to make them feel bad for this, but you may have to ask many questions the user thinks they already answered to get to the root of the problem.
  4. Make phone calls. For some reason, some folks don’t like to make phone calls. We’d rather send an email/text/chat, etc. but I believe that there is nothing more productive than a phone call for getting the exchange of information done quickly. It also adds the personal touch and can make for better relationships with users.
  5. Be productive by keeping email in its place. Check your email no more than once per hour and turn off notifications for email if at all possible. This keeps you more productive so that you can take better care of the backlog of stuff you already have to do. There are many other productivity tips I can recommend in a future post.

Amazing Technologies That Reformed History

A Look at Seven Amazing Technologies That Reformed HistoryTechnology has changed and expanded drastically during the last five years. It pervaded into every possible niche be it business, education, real estate or any other. Smart-devices, no bigger than the palm of our hands, are standalone computer devices with which taking pictures, browsing internet, send emails and performing typical phone operations is a cinch. You may feel as if technology has finally reached its limits but is actually striding beyond imagine.

If we go back to around 20 years or so, personal computers started to land in small sizes and affordable for almost every family to buy. But that’s just the beginning and technology since then showed no sign of slowing down or decline as every device available today is tied to computing by some means.

When you compare the original size of computers with present times, it’s hard to comprehend how and why it happened but the smaller they get; more powerful and faster performance than ever. Since discussing the complete list of tech revolution in history can be considered infinite, few are worth mentioning so let’s have a closer look.

1. Communication

Internet lets you connect with friends, family and work mates anywhere around the world with just a simple click. We’re open to a wide stream of communication mediums such as texts, A/V chats, email and social media. Each provides a unique and interactive experience as if one’s sitting right besides you. You no longer need travelling to the post office, wait for your turn, draft the letter while it takes a week for plausible feedback. Long distance phone calls via landline are pointless ever since the evolution of finer alternatives like Skype, Viber, Tango, WhatsApp and various others with a free-call option.

2. Intellectual automotive

Emergency calls and standard GPS monitoring features provide composure to both driver and passengers. There’s no need to carry paper map even while you’re travelling alone at night or exploring a desolate place for Google Map is your personal and handy travel guide! All you should do is install a Wi-Fi device in your transport, sync it with smartphone and ride peacefully. Meanwhile the concept of driverless cars may still be in its experimental stage but few companies have already integrated the technology, taking road trips on a new level.

However, like computers and other such devices, automated cars are also a target for cyber criminals who also became more devious with time. Imagine going to the beach while a hacker breach into the system core and divert the car towards a desolated area! You needn’t worry about that for its unlikely to happen anytime soon since manufacturers have installed a fail-safe system.

3. Fibre optics

This technology was originally established in 1840’s by Babinet and Colladon. Fibre optic tubes are known to refract light within glass tubes and lose less light over the tube length. Alexander Graham Bell; in 1880s introduced a technology to relay voice signals over optical beam. When suffused, these fibre optic cables are impenetrable to static distortion that makes them excellent networking resources. It’s a boosting factor for remote IT infrastructure and a fine addition to internet based technology.

4. Solar Cells

Solar cells are capable to alter light into electrical energy that we know as a photovoltaic effect; originally demonstrated in 1839 by Becquerel. Survey results pinpoints that efficiency has increased to above 45 percent and a typical 5×5 foot solar cell when screwed to your house can certainly meet all energy needs.

5. Graphene

Fashioned at the University of Manchester, UK; graphene is surely a game changer in tech industry. It’s simply a sheet of graphite; one atom thick with amazing heat and electricity conductivity. It’s also envisaged that the technology when introduced in mobile devices would make them far more powerful and supple!

6. 3D Printing

We’re in an age where 4K and quantum-dot technology is rising gradually but that doesn’t mean neglecting 3D. Creating a 3D object in digital format is commonly exploited in automobile and avionic industries surprisingly from 1980s. While the same technology is integrated in printers that allow you to produce nearly everything from simple teapots to sophisticated weaponry!

7. Nano-Tech

Nanotechnology refers to manoeuvre of matter on molecular, atomic and supramolecular level. In general term, “Nano” means very small whereas nano-robots are scrolled down to the size of nanometre. This technology is widely used to identify cancer in a living body and execute nano surgery. Further augmentation allowed these tiny robots to enter human bloodstream for treatment of terminal cancer.

Is it 100% Reliable?

Undoubtedly, technological advancement has transformed our lives entirely but all of it isn’t always in a good way. Too many IT professionals are engaged 24/7 on strengthening internet while hackers and programming experts surface with new schemes to breakthrough privacy. End users in contrast are caught up amidst an endless clash while tracking these hackers becomes more challenging. This makes World Wide Web not 100 percent reliable but still remains on the verge of bringing an optimistic change.

Choosing the Right Technology for Kids

Choosing the Right Technology for KidsToday, we live in a digital world that’s supported majorly with technology and while technology has changed our world, it also plays an important role in our child’s developmental milestones. Thanks to the latest trends in the field of educational based technology, kids are now getting up close and personal with technology daily, at homes and at school.

But is there really a need to of making technology available only at a particular age? Not really, as technology also plays a very positive and vital role while a child is growing. Today with an introduction of smartphones and other mobile devices like tablet PCs and tablets, we have quicker and comfortable access to the internet at any time and any place. This makes it a must have for kids too, as they help promote and share knowledge and information that’s related to child’s day to day activities along with school based education.

What to buy?

There’s a whole wide range of electronic toys and devices available in the market, that are great portable devices to teach your little ones. But deciding what to buy is difficult at times. But we as parents have a fair idea on what might suit our child and what products may excite him to learn. Remember, each child develops differently and would have their own learning milestones. So don’t push too hard and do keep in mind the following guidelines while buying these products:

Pre-Nursery: 0-3 Years

It’s an ideal age to introduce them to a variety of sounds and lots of colorful stuff. Look for products that feature sounds, are good to touch and feel and most importantly are ‘play friendly’ in terms of safety measures.

You can buy a stuffed toy that makes a sound, music rattles to make him giggle, something that lights up like a room monitor that glows and pick up books that have bright pictures and sounds too. All these would help a child learn the ’cause and effect’ and learn via touch and feel. These will keep the child occupied for a little longer and will open a world of possibilities too.

Prep 2-5 years

At this age, a child needs to hear interesting sounds, see lots of movement around and touch and feel the stuff. This is indeed the most inquisitive age for our little explorers, so be very cautious on what you are gifting them. Encourage them to play with action figures that make sounds and are movable, interactive story books, electronic playsets and talking animals make creative buys.

To increase their learning, gradually introduce them to your smartphone that has a wide range of easily downloadable kid’s applications for listening to rhymes or learning numbers, learning shapes & colors. Read them stories that are interesting and show them the moving images to keep them enthralled and entertained. Try creating learning with a theme, so that kids learn faster. Visit a Zoo and ask them to identify the animals!

+5 and above:

Once the kids are 5, it’s different to keep a track on what technology they are getting exposed to. At this age, they’ll no longer be interested to play with electronic toys or e-readers and would in time, reach out to the internet and play video games or other handheld games that have enhanced features like 3-dimensional effects.

So try to introduce them to a leap frog or similar educational electronics and let them choose what they need to explore. Make sure they are involved in physical activities too.

Screen time too needs to be fixed, as the bright images of the computer screen can affect their sensitive eyes. Don’t let them get into a habit of only sitting on the computer. Change your passwords regularly. Offer kids other interesting things to indulge in. Reward or surprise them with gifts.

Please make sure to be around the child whenever they are on the laptop and keep a track what they are watching or reading. Let them keep experimenting independently with new things. Help them search for educational websites and other interactive games. Kids can also read and learn about science experiments and increase their knowledge bank.

While the technology is a boon, remember it is crucial for a kid to keep active in an environment where he is physically active. So opt for outdoor activities and let them explore the natural space. Do praise them in all that they do and inculcate their interest in technology and keep them exploring this amazing world.

Each child is different and with a whole wide range of electronic toys and devices available in the market, there are times when we as parents can’t figure out what to buy and when is the ideal time to introduce them to new technology. These guidelines would help you make a better decision.

Do We Give Thanks To Mobile Phones Or We Curb It Down

Do We Give Thanks To Mobile Phones Or We Curb It DownPleasure or Punishment

Do we give thanks to the mobile phone for blessing us with technology or we curse it because it has distanced us from our families? It has done both actually. Since the advent of 21st century the technology has also turned new and given us unimaginable things that we didn’t even think of in the 1990’s. But look now. Today, the iPhone 6, the tablets, the Smartphone, the laptops and palm tops and what not have made things so easy. We can book our movie tickets, download huge 4 hours movies and documentaries, learn hard mathematical equations, download recipes and eat delicious food and what not. Mobile has done everything that we humans are not capable to do it by our own physical hands. And what’s ironic it is us-the human brains that have invented this piece of technology. But is it is really giving us what we wished for?

All-Town Story

For the techno freaks this is a good option. They can’t live without these precious assets for even a single minute. Look at the college and school going teens, every single one would have earphones plugged in or are messaging on the social sites to their so-called bosom friends. But are they really close to them? Just think about it. You are sitting on a dinner table with family; everybody is talking with each other. But, the person with cell-phone is not talking. He is chatting and that too with his never seen friend. This will make the parents angry and they will speak stern with the kids who in turn will make the kids angry and rebellious. The whole thing will lead to nowhere.

What We Need To Do

You are well-aware of the cyber bullying cases and illicit messages on group sms-chat. You child befriends some friend of a friend, and he/she may not be good for him. They might bully or harass him/her if the child doesn’t listen to their demands. These mobile-hackers spare no one. They make small kids, teens and even senior adults the victim of their heinous world. This is why the child-care and teen-help organizations are constantly asking and requesting the parents to keep a controlled-check on the usage of the mobile phone by their kids. If necessary, keep a parental lock or a password or print out the list of your child’s friend list. Whenever they are not around, surf the history of their laptop and see whether they are browsing any illicit pages or talking with someone who is a lurking danger. I am not asking you to pry or making a mistrust- that’s not the point. The point is- you need to keep your child safe at every moment of his/her life. Young girls and boys will get lost in this world of technology which shows bright technical colors. We cannot stop the advent but at least we can control it.
